Meet Alice
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a teacher turned author, youth worker, trainer, education consultant. My main specialism is relationships and sex education (I even have a masters in it!), but late diagnoses of Autism and ADHD, following multiple diagnoses of my daughters, has led to an additional focus on special educational needs and disabilities, particularly in the sensory realm. There are a huge number of crossovers between my two areas of work not least because sex is sensory!
I mostly work with educators and parents, supporting them to support the children and young people they work with, answering their tricky questions and signposting the best avenues of support. However my favourite work is direct delivery to young people. I am currently working on a Sexual Ethics project with some incredible young people in Medway. This project really makes my feminist heart sing as we wrestle with issues affecting young people today, from looksmaxxing to ghosting to choking. The young people are so keen to explore, discuss, and ultimately call out and change the toxic unethical behaviours they see regularly.
As a SEND mum I am also keen to support wider parents so locally I co-founded and run RepreSENt,which aims to support local SEND parents. We have a very busy WhatsApp group of over 280 parents now!
What inspired you to join Bath Women's Fund?
One of my core values is 'making a difference' alongside equality, curiosity and creativity. I really love the idea of women working together to make a difference locally.
What are the issues that you are most passionate about?
Neurodivergent girls getting their needs met particularly at school and in relationships and sex education. Also spreading the word on Sensory welldoing - did you know we have at least eight senses - and they all impact your regulation more than you think. My picture is me on a swing in an Indian restaurant, meeting my proprioceptive and vestibular needs AND eating delicious food- yes please!
What would you be most interested in learning about as a Bath Women's Fund member?
What else we can do to support young people to be their best selves in the local area (more swings for teenage girls - Make Space for Girls?)
What is your favourite place/thing to do in and around Bath?
Having the Indian Poutine at Rooted Café around the corner from where I live. You might dismiss it as 'just' chips, cheese and dahl but then you would be missing out - it's actually heaven in a bowl.
